John of Gigantic Brain 2nd interview

by Dusty
It's been a while since we spoke to you, John, and in that time a lot has happened with you and Gigantic Brain. For a while you stopped doing Gigantic Brain and focused on other projects only to suddenly come back months later with a record deal (Razorback Records) and plans for a proper full length album. What happened to 1) make you stop doing Gigantic Brain initially, 2) decide to resurrect Gigantic Brain and 3) sign with the mighty Razorback Records?
I stopped writing for gigantic brain because it just wasnt making me happy anymore. I had been doing it for about 2 years and I guess I was just getting bored with it. I thought the guitar was too weak and the recordings were too bad. So I decided to quit which didnt last very long. Thats when I got an E-mail from Bill on Last House on the Right Records. He wanted to release some stuff and I was excited. Anyway the sad part about that is that soon after that I get an e-mail from Billy at Razorback which completely blew my mind considering I already owned alot of the Razorback Releases like Ghoul, Lord Gore, and Fuck...Im Dead. So anyway that explains why I signed with Razorback, but bill from Last House on the Right seemed to think I was pretty irresponsible about the whole thing. I wanted to release somethin with him too but he didnt like the idea too much. Hes a proffessional though so I know he knows what hes doing and Ive only been signed for a handful of months now so its still new to me and I was pretty confused. Either way everythings great now.
Do you have any releases of any sort planned besides the upcoming
full
length? Perhaps the long-awaited split with Ganglia?
I would love to have the Ganglia split someday, but honestly Im not sure how much longer GB will be around. I love it but i just cant write as much as I used to. I dont even listen to much metal at all right now. So other than the full length I dont see alot happening :(
What have you been listening to as of late? I noticed on some of the newer songs off the "Invasion" disc that you've thrown some hardcore breakdowns into the mix.
I havent been listening to much of anything really. I even sold 70% of my cds. In fact im not even that much into music at all haha. I know theres alot of breakdowns but I dont like hardcore in the least bit. I do enjoy stuff like gorelord though and that guy is loaded with the most killer breakdowns Ive ever heard. I think if I could sound like anyone it would be a mix between Gorelord, Mortician, and Pantalones Abajo Marinero.
I spoke of you doing another project earlier which happens to go by the name of Samurai; The Love and the Fury. What inspired you to start that project and finally utilize your clean vocals the way you have? Also, can we ever expect to see a Samurai release?
I started samurai just because I had always written soft stuff but I had never done it all by myself. I had written the music and had vocalists work with it. Anyway I wanted to write for myself as more of just something to make me feel better and to not even show alot of people. I can tell you right now that 90% of the Samurai songs (which is about 35 songs) are about my girlfriend. I wouldnt mind having a Samurai release but no labels are interested at this point. Samurai hasnt been around long so maybe just a little more time will change everything I hope.
I've played Samurai for several of my friends and while they
like both
Gigantic Brain and Samurai they actually liked the latter better. Have
you received any feedback along those lines? Or do people perfer Gigantic
Brain over Samurai?
Well alot more people know about gigantic brain and alot more people find gigantic brain more interesting. But they are so different that I cant really compare the fans. Some people Ive met love samurai but completely hate GB.
Last time we talked I asked you about your older projects and
how they
influenced you on the road to Gigantic Brain. Now that I have found
the
Human Piss Parade full length on Soulseek and have everything from COARA
and Funeralfor a Slop Whore I have to know… is there any possibility
that you will ever revisit your old projects and give us some new stuff
from them or is it just Gigantic Brain and Samurai from now on?
Honestly Id love to do more of the old stuff but it probably wont happen. Human Piss Parade pretty much is Gigantic Brain just with a new name. The Confusion of a Raped Animal was just leading into Human Piss Parade. Now Funeral for a Slop Whore was really fun and it was a 2 man Project. My good friend Nathan did alot of vocals on those and Id love to do more someday but he doesnt live around here anymore.
How long did it take you to beat that new version of Ninja Gaiden? I know you were psyched about it before it came out and I know you have a copy. Don't lie John, how long?
Well this sucks but I never beat it. I did however get to the last level and I absolutely Loved the game. It rules but I found it really hard and for some reason I called it quits right before the end. Maybe someday I'll pick it back up again though and finish it headbang.gif
Thanks for playing along yet again John, we really appreciate it. Keep up the good work brotha!
