Interview with Wayd

-What bands would you say Wayd is most similiar to?
I wouldnt like to make any comparisons.we try to make music our own way.anyway,we all like band which started to do something different and innovative in metal scene.I can mention Death,Atheist,Cynic.......
-I was wondering, where did the band name, "Wayd" come from? What does it mean?
Wayd is just a name for four people playing music they like.It represents our style a view on music.Theres no specific dictionary word for it.
-I've read somewhere that the members of Wayd came from the bands Marion and Dysentery. I've never heard any songs by those bands though. Tell us a little about them. What were they like?
Those bands were our musical beginnings.Our drummer Brano and guitar player Milan played in Marion which had its roots in thrash metal.Me and another axeman Richard played in Dysentery which was death metal band.Both bands released few demos and split up when Wayd started.
-You guys are pretty technical, where'd Wayd learn how to play music?
We attended some jazz lessons for inspiration,but basicly we learned to play ourselves.
-I hear a Cynic and Death influence in the music. What other bands influenced Wayd? Are there any particular jazz musicians you look up to?
There are some names like Dennis Chambers,Stanley Clark,Al di Meola,Chick Corea-but we arent into jazz a lot.we have a wide range of metal and non-metal influences from King Crimson,Dream Theater to Arcturus.Also Italian Sadist was a great band.Fripp,Di Giorgio,Hoglan-another exaples of musicians we like.
-Opeth did the Damnation album which was just prog rock without metal. Has Wayd ever thought of doing something similiar, like making an album with just jazz?
No,no yet!We have some songs without power chords on each of our albums but we havent intended to do such a Cd like Opeth.
-Besides jazz and metal, there any other music styles Wayd listens to?
As I said theres wide range of music we are interested in.We arent focused only in metal scene but were open to any interesting idea and style.It would be a pity to put some barriers on your musical perception.
-I really like how there's a saxaphone in some songs, it's very different from all the other death metal bands. Are there any other instruments you guys thought of putting in the music? Maybe a harmonica or violins would sound cool.
On our albums we tried to use some percussions or synth sounds.We like to put some of our songs to a different level.Wee planning to use unusual instruments on next Cd too.Offen its just matter of moment,sudden idea,what were going to use.Sound of saxophone is great and its warm sound creates interesting atmosphere.
-When you guys are writing songs, do you start with the lyrics or the music?
Basically we start with and lyrics are written apart.Sometimes it takes a longer time tofit some lyrics into our music.Mostly we put lyrics into a song when musical part is completed.
-So far, what album would you consider to be Wayd's best?
So far we are satified with Decadance the most. Its our latest release,we spent a lot of time making it and the responses and reviews are great.
-In America, not so many people are familiar with Wayd yet. In your home country, are you guys popular?
We are playing in WAYD for 10 years and after all the time were got a lot fans.We can tell we belong to the top in Slovak metal scene.We play a lot of gigs here in Slovakia and meet other bands.We respected by fans and reviewers.
-Are there any other talented bands in Slovakia that everyone should check out?
Maybe youre heard the names such as Lunatic Gods,Depresy,Sanatorium,Dementor.They each play death metal but different sort of.As another examples of good bands I can metion Nostrum which plays progressive rock or Dysanchely-death metal with gothenburg influences.
-What song would you say represents Wayd's qualities the best?
It could be either Velvet Deserts,Dust or Breaking the Ascedence
-So what is Wayd up to at the moment? Any work on a new album?
Yes,weve finished music to 4-5 songs and continue to compose another ones.We would like to release our new Cd next year/spring?/
