Comics, Books, & Zine Review

If you don't own a single Gore Shriek comic, you're on my shit list bub. As you can tell, the first issuue's cover is what Carcass used for some of their stuff. Good amount of slime, guts, zombies, mutants, and dark twisted tales in the pages of Gore Shriek. You can find some back issues on ebay somewhere.

This here is April Horrors issue 1, dunno if there's more but I wouldn't bother hunting it down. Not gory or anything. Stories weren't all that interesting either. They just did spoofs of Edgar Allan Poe and HP Lovecraft stories with a pretty tame tone. The art is standard cartoony/comic b&w stuff. This was a blind buy comic cause it was only a couple cents extra to throw it in an ebay lot. I didn't even know what the cover looked like. The word "horror" was in the title so I just gave it a shot....oh don't act like you never did that before too on ebay! Ah well, I guess the cover is pretty cool, reminds me of the Thing.

Angry Youth Comix volume 1, pretty thick b/w book loaded with sick twisted dialgoue and plots, pretty fucking hilarious and succeeds at being gross, offensive, and angsty. I like the stirps about the cute little animals that are in the KKK yet people still love them, perhaps a social satire about how superficial people could be.

I havent read previous issues of this zine, but it's damn good. Lots of insightful views into underground art mostly centering around the metal and punk sub-cultures. In issue 8 there's an intersting interview with Repka, the legendary artist behind Megadeth and Death album covers. Apparently he designs toys too now. Loads of pics of his work in here. There's another interview with Nor, the dude that did the WTN album cover. Oh yeah and the articles alone are wroth checking out, there's a fascinating one about the symbolism behind flags in punk art and one about the history of tattoos. Dennis Dread is the dude that runs this DIY zine so you know this is quality. Info on ordering available here: http://www.dennisdread.com

Evan dorkin is my favorite guy in alternative comics EVER! His Milk and Cheese shit rules and so does all the dork stuff. You could get this stuff in a collected TPB I guess cause tracking down issues is a pain in the ass. Anyways, as for the comics, there's lots of making fun of fat geeky comic fanboys that collect Batman cups, tons of random silly smartass strips...and uhh yeah other stuff that makes Evan Dorkin rule.

It's exactly what the title is "Filth". This is stuff that's hilarious in a nasty dirty kinda way. Reminds me of Mike Diana's totally offensive stuff but the art here is even more polished, kinda like Garbage Pail Kids on even more crack. Get this and other titles from the creator dude over here.

Whoa, this cover rules. Cheesy 80's Marvel action comic with people getting their asses kicked. In issue 5 of Merc, some dude's sister is kidnapped by a biker gang cause she's like some hot rock singer...people get their asses kicked and stuff, a few explosions, and a surprise ending! Not really worth hunting down, but I jsut wanted to show off the rad dudes with machine guns. Marvel is so gay these days that they wouldn't pull off this kinda shit anymore.

My favorite mini-comix. You should definatley get all 3 issues. Basically this comic has disgusting jokes centered around porno or scat, fucked up offensive humor, smartass comments about the bible, and one issue has a comic about a Cannibal Corpse show where a guy gets punched in the nuts! Very offensive material and very easy to read. The best comic strips are the ones with the mice, lots of gore in them.
